Pre-Interview Q&A
Q: Explain the ocean to someone who has never seen it before.
A: Looking out at the ocean, there is water as far as the eye can see. There is sand and there are waves, but you probably already know this. The ocean is too complex to sum up in physical terms and it is impossible to convey the emotion that it fills you with, but this could maybe help paint a picture. The vastness of the world is amplified by the sight of the water going on and on. There is a sense of peace, but also a sense of insignificance. You start to understand the millions of things living just out of sight, inflicting a feeling of fear, but also wonder. As you stare out into the full emptiness, you may start to consider just how far you are from the next portion of land. No matter the distance, the ocean also gives a sense of connection because everyone sees the same ocean, no matter where they are. It is vast, peaceful, scary, mysterious, and full of life. To sum it up, the ocean is a duality.
Q: Why are you interested in ocean conservation?
A: I am interested in ocean conservation because of my interest of sharks. Millions of sharks are killed due to overfishing every year, causing their population to dramatically decrease at an alarming rate. On a more social level, I care about ocean conservation because of the lack of interest of other people. We watch documentaries and read news articles about the effects we have on the environment, we feel bad for about 10 minutes, and then we continue on with our lives without changing anything about ourselves and just hope that the problem will solve itself. This is what drives me to better myself, and hopefully inspire others to better themselves as well.
Q: What is a piece of art that you feel represents your life?
A: The painting "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali is a piece of art that I feel describes my life, or at least my inner perception of it. I feel that this piece represents change as a slow but sudden occurrence. There is a constant sense of change that I can feel lurking around me, but it always makes its appearance at unexpected times.

Q: If your life was a movie, how would you be represented and what kind of movie would it be?
A: I feel as though my life could classify as a family sitcom. My family's dynamic is very chaotic but in an almost charmful away. I think that I would be represented as the side character that everyone likes more than the actual main character.
Q: If you were an endangered species, which one would you be and why?
A: (This species is threatened but not endangered.) I would most likely be a basking shark. I tend to look a little intimidating, but I am pretty harmless. I don't go out of my way to go faster than need be and I enjoy cooler temperatures as well.
Q: Where is somewhere you have always wanted to travel to?
A: Somewhere that I have always wanted to travel to has to be either Japan or Ireland.
Japan: I would love to go there to see a change in culture and scenery. The technological advancements and the amount of convenient locations and items that serve those who live/visit there really interest me. I have always wanted to experience these first hand.
Ireland: My great-grandparents were immigrants from Ireland so I would love to visit to connect with my ancestors.
Q: If you could only eat one food item for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Salad. Why? Because what really classifies as a salad? If I throw all of my favorite snacks into a bowl and mix them together, isn't it technically a salad?
Q: If you had one day to do anything you wanted, what would you do?
A: Going on an adrenaline tour sounds like a fantastic way to spend this day. Skydiving, cliff diving, hangliding, parachuting, jet skiing, etc. All of these things are high on my bucket list so it is very likely I would try to do as many as possible.
Q: What determines if a turtle hatches as a male or a female?
A: Sea turtles, like some other reptiles, hatch as either male or female due to the temperature of the air around them. Low temperatures produce males, and high temperatures produce females. If the temperature fluctuates then there will be a mix.
Q: What is coral?
A: Coral is a type of animal that has an exoskeleton and dwells on the seafloor. They are sometimes used by other sea animals as shelter, specifically in coral reefs
