Day in the life reflection
Name of Assignment: A Day in the Life, 1 & 2
Subject: Hawaiian History
Facilitator/Teacher: Ms. Terry
The goal of this assignment was to “Research in depth one “Hero” from Hawaiian history. You will get to know this historical figure and attempt to write mock journal entries from important moments in their life.” I chose the hero Joseph Kahahawai and as a result I was able to develop my 21st Century skills
The skill that developed the most during this assignment was my Thinking and Problem solving skills. This may seem like a stretch at first, especially for a history assignment. But I was put into multiple situations where I had to analyze interviews, police reports, and a variety of websites in order to accurately depict the life of Joseph Kahahawai.
I am proud of my ability to properly convey the emotions that Joseph was going through while also demonstrating my knowledge of the Hero and the events he went through. I am also proud of my depiction of how life would have been during this time
I have always focused on math and science when it came to thinking and problem solving, so analyzing literary sources and rearranging the information into a first person narrative was a first for me.
The most difficult part of this task was trying to get the dialect right. Not only is this from a different time, it is also a different accent with different slang. Trying to learn this and write it in a way to not be offensive proved to be quite difficult.
I could probably improve this work by being more descriptive. If I could start over and have an unlimited amount of time I would probably make a simple storyboard in order to convey the story in a more organized way.
This was a completely new experience for me which is what made it so interesting and engaging. I wish I had learned how to do something like this earlier in my life because it would have drastically improved my writing skills a long time ago.
I can apply these new found skills and analyze stories, poems, and other forms of literature in a more analytical way. I have always been taught to read things with an open mind, but it could prove effective to try to be analytical as well.
